In 1970, as Dan Kane prepared for a transformative year abroad as an exchange student, his mother gifted him a modest Instamatic camera, suggesting he might want to capture moments of his journey. Neither could have foreseen that this small gesture would ignite a lifelong passion and career. Now, "over a hundred thousand images later" and after decades spent living in Berlin, Kane returns to his native South Dakota, offering the people of his home state a glimpse into the profound artistry inspired by that simple gift. Kane’s steadfast commitment to analog photography defines his body of work, which delves into the interplay of form and shadow. His visual exploration of the male human form as a terrain of shapes and contours finds a compelling resonance in this exhibition where his figurative work is presented in dialogue with his striking photographs of South Dakota's sweeping landscapes and dramatic scenery. Through predominantly black-and-white photographs, Kane evokes both the nuanced beauty and enigma of his subjects, while grounding his vision in a mastery of design elements and principles that echo classical and academic artistic traditions.

Benvenuto Cellini ... Benvenuto Cellini était un orfèvre, médailleur et sculpteur italien (Florence 1500-1571). Cellini a eu une vie extrêmement agitée, alternant périodes de gloire et disgrâces auprès des grands de son temps. Ses mémoires, qu'il dicta à un de ses élèves et qui ne seront publiés qu'en 1728, ont fait connaître cette vie aventureuse, qu'il mena à Rome, à la cour de France et à Florence. Dans cette œuvre emplie de détails réalistes et burlesques sur le milieu artistique en Italie et en France, s'exprime à la fois l'exigence artistique et l'ambition de la réussite matérielle de Cellini. Ce récit eut beaucoup de succès en Europe – Goethe en donna une traduction en allemand. On peut le considérer comme la première autobiographie « moderne », en ce sens qu'il accorde une part importante à l'expérience individuelle et à l'apprentissage de l'artiste. La Nymphe de Fontainebleau (haut-relief en bronze, vers 1543, château d'Anet, puis Louvre) marque les débuts de Cellini dans la sculpture de grand format, dont il sera l'un des meilleurs représentants maniéristes en Italie. On retiendra aussi son Persée de la loggia dei Lanzi, à Florence (1545-1553). Besides his works in gold and silver, Cellini executed sculptures of a grander scale. One of the main projects of his French period is probably the Golden Gate for the Château de Fontainebleau. Only the bronze tympanum of this unfinished work, which represents the Nymph of Fontainebleau (Paris, Louvre), still exists, but the complete aspect can be known through archives, preparatory drawings and reduced casts

 

Alfredo Araújo Santoyo ... Aleksandar Antonijevic ... Aleksandar Antonijevic (b. 1969) is a Canadian fine art photographer, as well as an internationally acclaimed Principal Dancer with the National Ballet of Canada. He was born in Pozarevac, former Yugoslavia. He was trained in classical ballet at the National Ballet School in Novi Sad and joined The National Ballet of Canada in 1991. An accomplished international guest artist, Antonijevic has performed with the English National Ballet, Inoue Ballet Japan, Ballet Santiago of Chile and PACT Ballet South Africa. He extended his love of dancing from the stage to the camera, implementing the same principles of form and space into his passion behind the lens. Aleksandar Antonijevic deals primarily with the form of the human body. In his photography, the artist captures that unquantifiable dynamic between two beings, to reveal the inner conversation of a lone model and to explore their meaning and impact on the viewer. The artist was influenced by the form of ancient Greek monumental sculptures, the work of Auguste Rodin and his ability to model the complexity and the elegance of the human figure; and the highly stylized and provocative contemporary photography of Robert Mapplethorpe. Describing Aleksandar Antonijevic’s body of work, Peter Clothier, art critic for Art News, wrote: “His images reveal to us, at first sight, the breathtaking beauty of the human form in its perfection; and the dramatic beauty of its ability to reach the absolute limits of its potential. He invites us into the most intimate places of the human anatomy and makes them a matter of pure line and contour. As viewers, we are enchanted by the chiaroscuro, the play of light and dark, the mysterious, quasi-minimalist abstract forms created by those draped figures, tensed against the drapery that enfolds them.” Aleksandar Antonijevic lives and works in Toronto.

Jack Smith ... Jack Smith is a British painter, currently based in Barcelona. He mostly paints landscapes and portraits. One of his portraits is currently exhibited at the European Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona. He has also exhibited in several venues in the United Kingdom including the Museum of Oxford and the Pitt Rivers Museum. Jack likes to experiment with different techniques. He uses palette knives to apply the paint thickly and lately has been using fast circular motions to give a dreamlike quality. He is currently an Assistant Professor at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. Frenn exhibits extensively, nationally and internationally. He had shows in the US, France, Germany, Lebanon and Paraguay. John Dugdale ... John Dugdale (born 1960 in Connecticut) is an American art photographer. Internationally renowned he creates poignant and stirringly intimate imagery using 19th century photographic processes and a 19th century aesthetic. At the age of 33, Dugdale had a transformative experience of nearly total blindness due to a stroke and CMV retinitis, an HIV-related illness. Completely blind in his right eye, Dugdale found himself seeing with less than twenty percent visibility in his left eye. While blindness ended his successful commercial photography career, he found himself free to explore his fine art, using friends and family members as studio assistants.
